Gutters
The cheapest part of the exterior, protecting two of the most expensive: the fascia and the foundation.
Gutters look like the least important thing on a house right up until they stop working. Then water sheets off the roof edge into the fascia board behind them, and down the wall to the foundation.
Both of those are expensive to put right, and both are considerably cheaper to prevent. Gutters are also the thing most likely to be damaged when a roof is replaced badly, which is one reason to have the same company doing both.
What to know
A full gutter rots the fascia
Water backing up behind the gutter sits against the board it hangs on. The gutter hides the damage until the board is soft and the whole run starts to sag.
And it reaches the foundation
In North Texas clay soil, water dumping at the base of a wall causes movement. Downspouts that discharge well away from the house are cheap insurance.
Replaced with the roof
If the roof is coming off anyway, that is the moment to deal with the gutters — access is already there and the drip edge and gutter are detailed together.
Common questions
Should I replace gutters at the same time as the roof?
If they are near the end of their life, yes. The access is already set up and the roof edge and gutter have to work together. If they are sound we will say so.
Do you repair gutters or only replace them?
Both. A sagging run with sound fascia behind it is often a repair. If the fascia has gone soft, that has to be dealt with first.
